Churchill, the Small Dutch settlement 20 miles west of Bozeman sits upon an assortment of runoff cobbles and glacial till left over from the last ice age some 15,000 thousand years ago. This fertile well drained soil yields generous crops of grains, potatoes, and vegetables husbanded by some of the best farmers in the world. You can see the leading eroded edge of a glacial alluvial fan from what was the massive glacial Gallatin River some 15,000 years ago.
Another more dramatic shot showing the ice age glacial alluvial fan. This shot is facing south east with Bozeman just visible sitting seemingly on top of the fan from center left.
Looking over bozeman south towards Yellowstone National Park.
